Tiger Humbles Rivals

AKRON: A wasp was the only living creature that got close to Tiger Woods in the third round of the $8.76million NEC Invitational in Ohio yesterday.

Woods was stung by a wasp on the 15th green, and he completed his round with the stinger still embedded.

But the sting did little to interrupt Woods on his way to a likely victory and possibly the lowest 72-hole score in US PGA Tour history.

The world No.1 fired a three-under-par 67, which pulled him nine strokes clear of Phil Mickelson, Hal Sutton and Phillip Price.

Woods, at a tournament-record 18 under, needs to shoot 64 in the final round to better the US Tour record, set by Mike Souchak at the 1955 Texas Open.

Stuart Appleby was the leading Australian, equal ninth at three under, while Robert Allenby was a further shot back.
